TDCB has been constituted to protect, promote and safeguard the language, tradition and culture of the Tamang Community in West Bengal.
It started Functioning on the 9th of September 2014 with its Headquarters in Kalimpong, Dist Darjeeling West Bengal.
The Government notifications relating to the creation of Tamang Development Board.
- (i). The “Tamang Development and Cultural Board” was constituted vide resolution No( 33-TDD/6S-80/13)dated 27th June 2014 was published in the Kolkata Gazette issued by the Tribal Development Department on the 16th of July 2014.
- (ii)The Tamang Development and Cultural Board was registered as a society under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act XXVI of 1961 bearing registration no S/M/1099 of 2014-15 dated 9th September 2014.
Two General board meeting and was held during the year 2015/2016 on 10th th May 2015 and 11th November 2015. Annual Board Meeting has been scheduled for 14th June 2016.
3. Implementation of Schemes:
Hyangla Dhim 2 (OUR HOME)
- 1.1000 houses are nearing completion under the Hyangla Dhim housing scheme during the financial year 2015/2016 from a grant aid of Rs 20 crores by TDD( Govt of West Bengal) and will be completed by August 2016 at a unit cost of Rs 2 lakh each.
The Board has received Rs 1,39,5000, for the making of toilets in the financial year 2015-2016 1000 beneficiaries from the bpl category have been selected to have a toilet ,the work is under progress and will be completed by July 2016.
Submission of plan and estimate for 100 bedded hostel has been forwarded to the TDD department with a request that the Youth Service Department may kindly be moved to sanction the Youth hostel Scheme on the 16/12/2015.
Cultural Literary and other events (2015-2016)
The 2nd Annual Tamang Convention and Locchar (New Year day of the Lunar calendar) celebrations were held on the 22nd of January 2015 at Lebong Ground Darjeeling. Beloved Hon chief Minister of West Bengal graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and wished prosperity and peace to all the Tamang Community.
Rashtirya Yuwa Manch participation by Tamang Damphurays:
The popular ancient folk instrument Damphu, and the original rhythm of Tamang Selo have a unique importance and influence in the Tamang Culture and even in the wider community and folk music,the Damphu is the identity of the Tamangs.The custodians of this tradition the “damphurays” for the first time got a wonderful opportunity to participate in the district level function on the 29th of January 2015 in Siliguri at the Rashtriya Yuwa Manch Festival held in Siliguri .The Tamang Development and Cultural Board recognize the need to keep this tradition going and have established the need for damphu classes with the objective to preserve the folk instrument of Tamang community and to make aware new generations about its importance.
Launch of Tamang Development and cultural Board Website:
The board recognises the need to reach out every singleTamang and to bring transparency in its operation to ensure that they have access to every infomation relating to further development relating to the Tamang Community, The offical website of the Tamang Development and Cultural Board was launched on the 29th of April 2015 at Kalimpong by Mr Puneet Yadav( District Magistrate ).WWW.TDCB.ORG is a unique website allowing all visitors to access various information and communicate via messages and mails which is responded to by a dedicated IT team.It also has scheme information(eg developments of Hyangla Dhim 1st phase and all beneficary names with photos,ST and minority scholarship schemes like Shikashree ,Kanyashree ,Pre and post Matric scholarship and Employment News, all with easy access to information and form downloads, for the benefits of Tamang Tribal and other communities. .The page is regularly updated and has a news flash which alerts all visitors about the latest developments of the board.( www.tdcb.org)
SEMINAR ON THE THE STATUS OF TAMANG LANGUAGE
In keeping up the objectives of the board and the importance to safeguard the Tamang Language and culture, the first ever Seminar on the recovery of Tamang language and literature was successfully conducted on the 27th and 28th of June 2015 by TDCB at Phunsong Sang Dang Takteling Tamang Monastery Conference Hall,Kalimpong and coordinated by Tamang Language & Sanskritik Conservation Samiti. Merabong-Chiyabari -Darjeeling . The Tamang language based papers were presented by different literary figures of the Tamang communities from the states of Meghalaya, Sikkim, Assam & West Bengal which added valuable inputs in this programme. Panel of discussions took place during these 2 days on improvement, awareness of the language amongst the Tamang community.The Seminar focused on preserving and propagating Tamang Script,Literature and Language.
Clean Green Darjeeling Initiative 2015
Members of the Tamang Developmentand Cultural board attended the Clean Green Darjeeling Initiative program held at the District Magistrate’s office on Independence day 15th of August 2015.
The board aims to keep up the state initiative about keeping the Hills “Clean and Green” and provide information and support relating to this issue.The importance of having a mandatory toilet has been adhered to in the housing scheme and the board will take on all relative steps to ensure building more toilets in future projects.
1ST FOUNDATION DAY of The West Bengal Tamang Development and Cultural Board
1st Foundation day of the West Bengal Tamang Development and Cultural board was held in Ronaldshay Park Kalimpong on the 16th of Febuary 2015.Hon Chief Minister kindly consented to be our chief guest and wished every success to the board.Thousands of Tamangs cheered and welcomed HCM,jubilant ladies thanking her for making them proud owners of Hyangla Dhim(OUR HOME)
Launch of Tamang Alphabets, Tamang, grammar and Tamang books:
On the 10th of November 2015 a function was held to launch Tamang alaphabets calendar and various grammar books to safeguard encourage the revival of Tamang language .More than 2000 copies of these calendars have been distributed to community members and every block and gp have been awarded these books to be taught in night classes in far flung villages.It was attended by participants from Darjeeling and Doars and Terai .The Board has ensured the implementation of Tamang Langauge classes in these regions .
Feliciation of young Tamang Achievers :
On the 27th of Nov 2015 a felicitation programme was held for the young achievers in the Tamang Tribal community. The Tamang Board encourages and values the new generation of our community who excel in various areas. This year, certificates of acknowledgement was awarded to these who had achieved excellence.(Medicine,administrative services,Engineering,toppers of board exams and any other area).The board aims to encourage and promote such achievements which will further encourage the younger generation ensuring a new generation of well read community members whilst keeping their age old Tribal customs and culture intact.
Ethnic Tribal Food Festival 2015
(i)Tamang Development and Cultural Board in collaboration with CMD(Centre for Mountain Dynamics,an NGO )organised an Ethnic Mountain Food Festival on the 28th- 29th of December 2015in Kalimpong where over 12 different Hill communities participated. The objective of this two day Festival was to showcase the nutritional values of Tamang Ethnic and distinct food /culture and echo the spirit of unity amongst the indigenous people of the Hills.More than 20 families actively participated in the festival
Particiation of Tamang Cultural Team at The Uttar Banga Utsav /Registration of damphurays as folk artists and pensions schemes for senior artists
The formation of the board by Hon Chief Minister has given a boost to our faltering culture and Tamangs who association with the “Damphu” is that of flesh and blood has been given opportunities to showcase our age old musical art .The Tamang Board cultural group participated in the three day Uttar Banga Utsav held in Darjeeling on the 22nd and 23rd of January 2016 .
The Tamang board now has 197 damphurays who are registered and certified by the Board as folk artists.They have all been recommended to the Department of Information and culture for certification as folk artist under the “lok prasar prakalpa “scheme of which 60 damphurays (senior citizens) have applied for state pension.
Sonam Locchar Festival 2016:
The Tamang New year ( Sonam Locchar) festival was organised by the Tamang Board on the 21st of February 2 016.The auspicious occasion was organised in the spirit Love peace Harmony .Various cultural items was showcased and was very well attended and appreciated by all community members.
Tamang Varnamala Introduction:
On the 5th of March 2016 The West Bengal Tamang Development and Cultural Board in collaboration with the “Varnamala Parivar”(NGO teaching ethnic languages in interactive and music form) have introduced the “Tamang Varnamala” which is being taught in villages as well as urban areas to enhance and encourage the learning of the Tamang Language.Various blocks have had workshops relating to this and with the end of the project at the end of the year the board aims to have atleast 50% jump in the speaking and learning of Tamang language.
Buddha Purnima celebrations:
The West Bengal Tamang Development and Cultural Board in association with Kalimpong Tamang Monastery organised and celebrated” Buddha Purnima “ on 21st May at the Phunsong Sang Dang Tarkeling Monastery Kalimpong admist great devotion and appreciation.
In the year 2016-2017 The West Bengal Tamang Development and Cultural Board aims at the following :
The Tamang Development and Cultural Board actively interacts with members of several self help groups to promote the unique Tamang culture and handicrafts as well as economically uplift a huge proportion of the Tamang Community who are involved in making these traditional items.
Self help group in production of traditional bags/mats and handerkerchiefs.
Based on the above a comprehensive project has been submitted to Pr Secretary (TDD) to implement the above.
2. Sporting Events:
The Tamang Board will be holding archery and horse riding events after the Monsoon period in various blocks and gram Panchayats to encourage tradional tribal sporting games.
3. Safeguarding Traditional herbalist and medicines.
Studies on Traditional Herbal healing practices of the Tamang Tribe. The number of Tamang herbalist is decreasing gradually and the present equation is very low compared to what it was 50 years ago.With the knowledge of Tamang System of herbal healing diminishing simultaneously ,it is important to document these facts systematically and assess their scientific value or usefulness to mankind.
4. Cultural Events:
The board will also aim to organise damphu and tamang selo competitions at the village and block levels to encourage participation and safeguard the Tamang culture.
5. Social Events:
The Tamang Board in association with Tamang Youth Association aim to hold atleast 3 medical and 3 blood donation camps in the remote areas by the end of the new financial year.
Leadership and skill training for Tamang Youths at block and village level will also be implemented from Sept 2016
6. Language and Literature :
With the successful launch of Tamang alphabets,warnamala and grammar books which are being taught ,the Tamang board will be publishing its Annual Magazine for the first time since the formation of the board .

Based on interactions with the community and requests from the tamang Community,The West Bengal Tamang Development and Cultural will also seek to propose the following schemes in the year 2016-2017

- 2. Jhora beautification schemes
- 3. Tamang Heritage and Museum building
- 4. Community Halls.
- 5. Night Schools.
